Ashtanga Yoga is a yoga of practice. It requires mental and physical application from which can be derived the development of strength, poise and inner wisdom. This method of Yoga involves the purification of the system through heat generated from the breath and continual movement. Our approach is not one of striving to achieve, rather, allowing the body to unfold in it’s own time through the active concentration of the breath, increasing vitality and lending a rhythm to this dynamic sequence while incorporating a softness and meditative quality.
There are different series in the Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga system, each one working and concentrating on different aspects of the individual. At Yoga Plus we teach the Primary Series as well as developing the practice of those who are on the Intermediate and beyond.
Two types of classes in Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga are offered: If you have never practised this method before then let us introduce you to Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga, gently guiding you part-way into the Primary Series with detail and explanations on breath and postures. The talk-through Introductory class commences each Monday and is suitable for those with little or no yoga experience. This class will create a solid foundation of yoga practice which will enable you to continue safely at home.
Self Practice (Mysore-style) class as practised by Radha and Pierre with their teacher Pattabhi Jois and his grandson, Sharath in Mysore. Here we will assist and adjust you to your fullest potential. If you already have a steady practice, this is a wonderful opportunity to develop it to a deeper level with the guidance of experienced and dedicated teachers, in a setting conducive to Yoga. If your practice is fairly regular or you have worked with us before and would like to develop it further then join our Mysore-style class where we will guide and assist you. We will also be there when you are unsure of details whether sequence or breath. There is always time allowed for theory, questions and discussion.
Astanga Yoga classes will be from Sunday to Friday. There will be NO Yoga classes on full-moon and new-moon (this does not apply to the other activities). Saturday is a free day.
Radha and Pierre
Radha has been studying and teaching Yoga since the 1970's. Then she met Sri K Pattabhi Jois and learned the Astanga Vinyasa system from him. For many years she returned to Mysore regularly spending whole winters
doing her 'practice'in his presence with his guidance and later when he was joined by his grandson Sharath.
She continues to teach the classes inspired by her experiences with them.
Pierre is a direct student of Sri K Pattabhi Jois and visited him regularly in Mysore to practice under his and Sharaths tutelage. His interests and research in Yogic matters have also led him to study various healing therapy methods. Pierre teaches Astanga vinyasa Yoga at Yoga Plus and elsewhere around the world.
Radha and Pierre’s teaching style is to ‘guide without interference’ and to encourage without pressure, enabling students to discover their full potential. Their view is that people of all ages and conditions can benefit from this Yoga and it has been their aim to pass on Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga in such a way that it does not clutter the mind with unnecessary dogmas, instead leaving both body and mind free to develop from its own inner wisdom. They believe that Yoga should enhance the enjoyment of life by making everything we do less complicated.
